How Soon Is Now?

Well, I slept better last night, but I’m suddenly running out of energy, and the caffeine appears not to be strong enough. It’s not a good sign when two tea bags isn’t enough tea to make your tea do the tea thing with the brain and the buzzy and the ahhh. So here I am wondering what I’m going to talk about almost as much as you three.

Maybe I should take a moment to tell you how I work. Won’t that be fun? See, what I do is, I sling a piece of shelving board across the arms of an old club chair (covered in a rather prematurely-worn brown cloth chair covering, which my agent still prefers to the late 80s tech noir upholstery the chair came with), upon which is propped an old PowerBook G4, with a standard Logitech PC mouse plugged into it.

Said G4 is the first and only Mac I’ve ever owned, and when it dies, it will probably be the last, too. It’s not that I don’t like Macs; actually, there are a number of things I really love about them. However, buying certain suites of software for the Mac is still prohibitively expensive, and if I ever do this again, I’ll want to buy a computer that I can use for graphic design, music composition and video editing, in addition to writing. Considering I already keep a desktop PC for such things, there doesn’t seem to be much point. Mackintosh will have to come out with a completely airborne computing environment for me to be swayed to spend the kind of money they typically charge for their professional-level models (remember when ALL Macs were professional level gear?).

I grouse and kvetch about my tech toys, but really, it’s only because I am completely dependent upon them, both for my livelihood and for my rather hermetical lifestyle. If you took my computers away from me, I’d be a fricking goner.

I think there are errands I have to run today that I can’t ask my agent to do for me, so I’m not sure how much work will actually get done today. However, I’m writing this article early to be posted during the usual time, for the sake of continuity. I hope all is well out there, and that some of you come back to read me this weekend, if you’re not too busy. Try to have a good day at work, and for those of you staying home today, you might want to think about putting on some pants. There’s an old man in the room with you, after all.

Eddie.

Don't be shy. Tell me what you really think, now.
